All About Pepper Spray For Self Defense

The world has come a long way in technological advances. Yet it is still a dangerous place. Criminality has become more complex in nature but the sad part is that the female is still considered as an easy target. Felonies against women have, as a matter of fact, increased over the years in countries all around the world.

In a fallen world, it is far trickier for a woman to survive than their male counterparts. But that is not to say a woman can be helpless all the time. In fact, this weakness can be deceptive if the woman is using a form of self-defense. Pepper spray is the most popular weapon. It is powerful and has a far-reaching effect. The good thing about this spray is that it will not kill the attacker but is enough to incapacitate for a time. Such a weapon is extremely effective and can save a woman’s life and dignity.

Pepper spray is technically called an OC spray. OC stands for Oleoresin Capsicum, basically a powerful lachrymatory agent. This is a chemical compound that can cause severe irritation of the mucous membrane (eyes and ears). Sometimes it can even lead to temporary blindness. The primary agent is capsaicin, a chemical compound that can be derived from the chili family. The several different types of this weapon available in the market today are Mace, Wildfire, Lipstick, and PAVA. The PAVA Pepper Spray has capsaicin, pelargonic acid vanillymide or desmethyldihydrocapsaicin. It is widely used in England. There is a synthetic version of this spray which is pelargonic acid morpholide, developed by Russians.

Aside from self-defense, controlling mobs, riots and even animals like bears, wolves, or dogs are also another use of this weapon. Pepper spray is completely non-lethal although it can be deadly if used in large quantities. If an entire can is applied to human eyes, the subject will permanently go blind.

Aside from severe irritation of the eyes and nose, other symptoms include difficulty in breathing, coughing, and a runny nose. The effect the spray depends on how much was used but on average it lasts from 30 minutes to an hour.

Some important tips in using pepper spray are the following. Your thumb should be on top of the trigger when carrying a canister. When your attacker comes too close to you, back up a little so that you will be positioned correctly. Use the spray generously so that the capsaicin can do its job as quickly as possible. While the assailant is temporarily incapacitated, get out of there in a flash.
