Save Money on Breakfast

Saving money on groceries usually means buying generic or lower quality brands. I recently discovered a great tip that cuts my breakfast cost in half! Not only do I not have to lower the quality of food, I’m actually getting more food and much better quality for half the price.

I like BIG bagels and I cannot lie! I think they are one of the easiest breakfast foods to fix, and good bagels can’t be beat for a tasty, filling breakfast. The problem is it’s hard to find good bagels. The prepackaged ones made by top brands like Lenders, Thomas, or Pepperidge Farms are expensive and they tend to be kind of dry and bland. They aren’t very substantial either.

Several years ago I tried the fresh bagels at Wal-Mart. They taste great but the dough is very light so they aren’t as filling as an authentic New Yory style. I started buying them because they are so much better than the prepackaged ones. The problem is the price keeps going up. When I first started buying them they cost $1.50 for a five pack which was a great deal. Then the price went up to $2.00. Then $2.50. Then they reduced the package to four for $2.50.

It dawned on me that authentic bagels from a real bagel shop might not cost much more than the Wal-Mart bagels. Boy was I in for a nice surprise. Our local bagel shop, Corey’s Bagels charges $7.69 for a dozen authentic Ney York style bagels. Even better, its’ a baker’s dozen so you actually get 13 bagels for $7.69. That’s 59 cents per bagel compared to 62 cents for Wal-Mart’s smaller less filling bagels.

Getting an authentic bagel for a few cents less than a Wal-Mart bagel is a great deal, but it gets even better. Local bagel shops make their bagels fresh every day. At Corey’s they take the bagels that didn’t sell by 2pm (their closing time) and freeze them. They sell the frozen bagels for only $4.50 for a baker’s dozen. That’s half the price of Wal-Mart’s bagels!

Last week we bought a bag and it had 16 bagels in it! We thaw one day’s worth of bagels at a time and enjoy authentic, flavorful, filling bagels every day of the week. This one simple step can save a family of four over $400 per year!
