The game of Baseball goes back as far as the Civil War. In those early days they didn’t play the game with gloves they used their bare hands. If you put yourself in their place just think of the number of errors you would have in the field. Think about the pitcher that had to catch all the balls thrown back to him from all positions. The hardest position would have been the catcher who would have to catch those 90 plus MPH fastballs.

In the early days of Baseball it was considered a part of the game to have bruised hands from catching the balls. In 1870 a catcher by the name of Doug Allison was the first player recorded as using a glove. He played for the Cincinnati Red Stockings and had caught several games that week. His hands were split and bruised, so he decided to wear a glove to protect them from further damage. He got laughed at and mocked by his teammates for being too soft.

It was five years later before another player put on a glove during a game. In 1875 Charles Waitt an outfielder and First Baseman put on gloves for protection. He tried to hide it by using flesh colored gloves. He also, was mocked for use of the gloves by his teammates.

In 1877 pitching great Albert Spalding wore a black glove during a game and didn’t receive any backlash from his teammates. He began inserting pads under the gloves to provide more protection to his hand. Gloves began to be more accepted for use and later even considered a safety standard for the game. Rawlings even received a patent for the design of a glove in 1885.

Bid McPhee was the last hold out to not wearing a glove. It was 1896 when he finally agreed to use a glove. That season he only had 15 errors, which was greatly reduced from his previous season of 45.

Early gloves were something like leather work gloves with no padding and the finger tips cut off so the player still had control of the ball. There have been many innovations to the glove to bring it to what we have today. In 1920 Bill Doak suggested that pocket be created by placing a web between the thumb and the first finger of the glove. Gloves have continually grown in size. Eventually it got to the size that the glove was worn on one hand and the other hand was used to trap the ball in the pocket and then throw the ball.

The gloves began to be designed for the position that was being played. The first base mitt, the catchers mitt, pitchers gloves, infielders gloves, and outfielders gloves. In 1889 Harry Decker sewed a glove on to the back of a pillow with a shape similar to the design we see today. The flex hinge mitt was introduced in 1950. It had a break in the overstuffed padding opposite the pocket to help the first basemen and catchers squeeze the two halves together. The catchers mitt grew to a whopping 45 inch circumference until being regulated at 38 inches in 1965. The closed web pocket was originally designed so that pitchers could conceal their pitching grip on the ball until they pitched the ball.

There have been many improvements to the baseball glove through the years. The game of Baseball has improved as well, with the changes in the gloves.

For a few minutes, forget the baseball portion of the argument. Take a step back and look at the Derek Jeter contract negotiations from a fresh perspective. Put your emotions on the shelf and think like a businessman.

Here’s the thing. The Yankee/Derek Jeter mini-feud and media fall-out are all about branding. It’s the Jeter brand vs. the Yankee brand and who needs who more; same as any business partnership or deal. If we think about the situation this way, it’s obvious that the Yankees hold all the cards, and here’s why: The Yankee brand is entrenched. The Yankee brand transcends any individual player, coach, manager, GM, and maybe even any owner. The Yankee brand will always survive. Is the same true for Jeter?

Here’s what we know so far. The Yankees have offered Jeter $15 million a year for three years. We do not know of any official Jeter proposal, but rumor has it that he wants somewhere in the range of 20-23 million a year for five or six years. Again, we don’t know the specific Jeter demands, but he hasn’t yet accepted the Yankees’ offer. This alone tells us he at least wants more than what is on the table. As of this writing, the Yankees claim that the original offer has not been adjusted. In fact, Jeter has been encouraged by Brian Cashman to put himself on the market and see if he can find a better deal; a challenge the Yankees feel comfortable with.

Here is where things get interesting. Here is where these negotiations begin to transcend baseball. This is where we find out about who has more leverage and who has the stronger brand. If not Jeter directly, Jeter’s “people” want fans to be emotional and express outrage at the Yankees. They want the Yankees to feel the pressure of an angry electorate and give in to The Captain’s demands. This was the strategy when Jeter’s agent called the Yankees’ actions “baffling.” Jeter’s people see an advantage in having these negotiations played out publicly through the media. However, this isn’t an election, and at the end of the day, the Yankees hold all the cards.

Ask yourself this: From a marketing perspective, who is Derek Jeter without the Yankees? What does Jeter represent without being attached to the Yankee name? As a player, he would still be a Hall of Famer, and he might have even won a World Series or two had he played for a different team his entire career. But would he really be regarded in the same way? Would he still be Captain Clutch? Would he still earn the same endorsements? These are tough questions to ask indeed, especially for Yankee fans, myself included. Hands down, he is one of my three favorite Yankees of all time along with Don Mattingly and Bernie Williams. No athlete with his type of success or fame has carried himself in a classier or more professional manner. However, realistically, and in the minds of Yankee management, Jeter wouldn’t be close to who he is without the Yankees. In a lot of ways, Jeter is only branded the way he is because he is a New York Yankee.

“The Yankee Way” is something the Yankees consistently promote. Though overused at times, in the minds of Yankee fans, it has come to represent success, class, discipline, and professionalism. And these traits have come to define Derek Jeter. Yet would another fan base look at him this way? Is he the same without the pinstripes?

I know this sounds harsh. I know this sounds unfair. However, this is the way business is done in the real world. For any franchise to be successful on and off the field, emotions and sentimentality have to be checked at the door. For any organization to have a strong brand no player can be bigger than the organization, regardless of how great or loved that player might be. Just think of the New England Patriots in the NFL.

Now, I don’t believe the Yankees handled this as well as they could have. Nothing should have been said to the media. The top dogs in Yankee management should have met in private, decided on a strategy, and kept their mouths shut. They overreacted to comments made by Jeter’s people and got fooled into thinking there was some kind of “media war” to be won. Jeter’s people dangled the bait in front of the Yankees, and the Yankees swallowed it whole. And please Yankees, spare us the talk about budgets and discipline with money. Even if the budget is an issue, to now draw a line in the sand with arguably the most popular Yankee of all time, at least publicly, is silly and disrespectful to your fans.

I believe Derek Jeter will be a Yankee next year. That’s not going out on a limb, but some actually believe there are other options. Nobody is going to pay Jeter more than what the Yankees offered. Maybe the Yanks will up the offer slightly, but it won’t be by much. Jeter’s people know this, and turning this into a public spectacle by challenging the Yankees is a complete PR ploy. It’s their best shot, because in the end, the Yankee brand will always win.

Baseball is Americans true past time. Fans gather and cheer on their favorite team throughout the season and speak of the sport when conversing with friends, family, and co-workers. The early beginnings of baseball can be traced all the way back to the 18th century. During that time, the game was a little different, not commercialized, and the rules varied. The concepts, however, were pretty much the same. As the sport became more popular, semi-pro baseball clubs begin to develop more or less in the 1860’s.

The New York Knickerbockers were the first team to play using modern day rules. Their club was formed in 1845 and consisted of people from the upper middle class of New York. It was a social club that played the sport as a past time. They were amateurs and not a professional organization. Club members followed a set of rules known as the “Knickerbocker Rules.” These rules mainly pertained to organization issues but also specified game rules. Earlier practices allowed players to be tagged out by a thrown ball. The New York Knickerbockers prohibited this action and set rules for tagging that are similar to current baseball tagging guidelines. These rules were put in place to prevent arguments and fights that the original method often created.

As of 1857, there were sixteen baseball teams in the New York area. They came together to form the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP). This was the beginning of organized baseball. It was also the first organization to create a championship for the sport. During the Civil War, membership grew tremendously. By 1867, there were four-hundred or more clubs in the organization. These clubs were all over the country and reached as far as California. It was not until 1869 that professional play was recognized and allowed.

Professional baseball did not become common until the 1870’s. At that point the amateur and professional players split. A new association called the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was formed for all professional teams. This association remained in existence for approximately four years and was the early beginnings of the major leagues. Contracts could be enforced by the clubs that prevented players from straying to other clubs. Clubs also had to play all scheduled games even after they were out of the championship. During this time, clubs made an agreement that denied non-white players the right to play professional baseball which remained in effect until 1947.

Many leagues formed throughout the following years and disbanded shortly after. The American League and National Leagues prevailed through the struggle. Their competitive offers to players created huge bidding wars that caused baseball contracts to be broken all over the country. These two leagues along with the national association signed an agreement that established dominance over major league baseball and created the World Series. The agreement prevent independents from buying out dominate players in the major league. Bidding wars were largely eliminated. Eventually many of the independent leagues joined the NA to prevent pilfering, gambling, and other issues. Check out Leo-wells-on-sports.com to read more about baseball and view his discussions on current baseball events.

Are you looking to take your baseball skills to the next level? Do you dream of throwing harder, batting better, and fielding with ease? These are skills that can be learned, honed, and perfected and baseball-training aids can make it possible.

Practice is the key to success in any athletic endeavor, and baseball is no exception.
The old adage “practice makes perfect” may be clich?, but it is true. Unfortunately, many sports, specifically a team sport like baseball, typically require a group of people to practice effectively. Conventional wisdom tells us that effective baseball training requires at least two athletes. Fortunately, this is no longer true as baseball training aids allow athletes to perform effective and efficient training without a partner or team.

Baseball and softball training aids are athletic training tools designed to develop and improve baseball specific skills. There are a variety of different training aids, each designed to perfect a specific area of your game. Each training tool improves skill-specific muscle memory; so effective training with these tools will vastly improve game performance.

Muscle memory is a form of procedural memory that stores the physical mechanics behind a specific task inside the brain. Muscle memory training is a very important part of athletic success. While it is always great to get faster and stronger, an athlete should really focus on getting faster and stronger in a way that is relevant to his or her specific sport or even his or her specific position.

Baseball training aids not only improve strength, conditioning, and hand-eye-coordination, they do so in a way that directly correlates to baseball success. For example, the Swift Stik lightweight training bat allows hitters to practice hundred of swings in one training session without the injury risks of a heavier bat. This type of repetition is the most important factor in building effective muscle memory.

Another training tool, the Arm Strong, improves throwing strength, accuracy and speed by combining light resistance training with a natural throwing motion. The benefits of this type of training are plain to see. In order to see the same results with an outdated training regimen, an athlete would have to spend hours in the gym, followed by hours playing catch and taking batting practice. That’s not exactly efficient.

While no training tool can ever replace real-game experience, there is no reason to risk injury and waste time by treating skill and strength conditioning as different types of training. With baseball training aids, all of these necessary training steps can be combined into one simple program.

That’s not all. The best part about these types of training tools is the fact that they can be used alone. There are no more excuses to slack off in the off-season. These training tools put success squarely in the hands of the competitor. It is time to gain a competitive edge with professional baseball and softball training aids.

It is a fact that softball uniforms and equipment play a vital role in boosting a team’s inspiration. Earlier, heavy sweaters were standard in this sport, and occasionally, color schemes were bizarre patterns of checks or shapes. Then sweaters became passé and short windbreaker-style jackets came into vogue. They further evolved into leathers and suede’s, all for supporting a team. Today, a nylon type windbreaker is a trendy option that is used to boost team spirit.

All softball teams wear distinctive uniforms. Usually, a uniform includes a cap, a shirt, an undershirt, and pants. Standards are laid down for these items.

For a team, caps must be identical, and are mandatory for male team members. Caps, visors, and headbands are non-obligatory for female players, and must be of the same color if more than one is put on. For a fielder choosing to wear a helmet or a cap is optional. At the back of a shirt, a number from 1 to 99 must be observable, and numbers like 02 and 2 are deemed identical. A player’s name should not necessarily be present on a uniform. Players cannot wear jewelry during a game, but some types of bracelets and necklaces are allowed. It is mandatory for all players to wear shoes, and shoes may have spikes, but these must not extend more than 1.9 centimeters away from sole. Wearing rounded metal spikes is prohibited, as these are made from hard plastic or other synthetic materials. Removable metal cleats are not allowed at any level of play, in order to reduce the possibility of severe injuries when a runner slides feet-first into a fielder. At all youth levels, that is under 15, in co-ed or mixed teams, use of metal spikes is forbidden in slow and modified pitches.

Every softball game has two teams, and if teams are wearing different uniforms, it becomes easier for players to distinguish among their teammates and opponents. Players in uniform get a sense of unity among themselves.

Madison Bumgarner is an achiever in the true sense of the word.

Madison has been in the news spotlight for quite some time now. He is one of the true giants of the San Francisco Giants.

Madison Bumgarner is in the Spotlight for his Skills

Madison Bumgarner is one great pitcher, and when he accompanies Brian Wilson they make a great pair to watch out for, and a worthwhile game to watch. Madison is only 21 years old, and is said of have no fear when it comes to pitching. Madison has been striking out major league hitters this entire season. At the age of 20, he became the second youngest pitcher ever to start a game for the Giants since the franchise moved west in 1958, older only than Mike McCormick, who made his debut for San Francisco as a 19-year-old when the team was still the New York Giants. Bumgarner made four appearances with the Giants in 2009, accruing an ERA of 1.80 and ten strikeouts, pitching ten innings without recording a decision. It has been a record of his quality pitching so far and quite a few games won based on him hitting his spots with his fastball.

A Different Perspective

It is nice to see encourage budding players to play the game to the best of their abilities, but they should also remember that too much of anything is poison. Accidents tend to happen, and great players all over the world are vulnerable and have succumbed to incurable injuries. Surgery does not always rectify everything that goes wrong with the body. Several people have misconceptions about surgeries; people consider liposuction as a bad thing to do. liposuction has been popularized as the shortest route to fat loss, but that is not the only function of this surgical procedure. Liposuction should be used for those people who are over-weight beyond control, or those who are genetically challenged and inherit genes of obesity. Celebrities have given liposuction surgery a bad face. Madison Bumgarner is an achiever in the true sense of the word.

Because of super stars such as Maradona and Pele,we know the number 10 jersey, and which has become a sign of Maradona and Pele,as soon as mention 10 jersey,we will remember them. The same is number 7,the handsome man-Beckham who wear it.

Different people have different meaning of jersey: in a player’s eyes, jersey is a symbol in pitch and the embodiment of the team status. In the eyes of a businessman, especially the club bosses, jersey are pieces of glistening silver.Sales of jersey and relevant sports goods will directly determine wether their pockets are full or flat. This is also the reason some marketing techniques are used to jersey sales. The only purpose is money! In the eyes of fans, jersey is the pronoun of their idol, having an idol jersey is their own desire; In the eyes of scientific and technical workers, the quality needs innovation, the style needs to be multiple.

Major league baseball(MLB) now exist 30 teams and are divided into the national federation and the American League. National League have 16 teams, and the American League has 14 teams. The two leagues are divided into the eastern conference and the western conference. Most of their jerseys are made in China, such as New York Mets Jerseys ,Okaland Athletics Jerseys and New York Yankees Jerseys.

The design of Jerseys is critical, because the games are often played in very hot climates, sport coat not only need to equipped with mesh cloth in players’ perspire arms―sweat glands area where the evaporation is stronger, but also need to weave special mesh areas with v-shape and sweat shaped in their chests and back glands area respectively. When playing the games, these designs will benefit players greatly.

Besides, close-fitting design can make jersey adapt players muscle contraction. Sports shorts and sports socks also used advanced synthesis elastic fiber. The high elastic fibers can relieve muscle shaking, making players feel more comfortable in the game. The designer said: “we have considered the weight, comfort and venues temperatures of jerseys fully before the design. New Jersey will make athletes feel more relaxed and comfortable, regulate the temperature of body and ascend physiological functions, thus making players play a better level.”

Don’t underestimate these designs, even if it just ascend 5% physiology function of players, which will bring the whole team fitness superiority.Perhaps in the MLB, you will not see player cramping in the key last minutes, you know, the temperatures can be high at least 30 degrees.

The New York Giants

Since their move from New York City to San Francisco before the 1958 season, the Giants and their fans have endured seasons of futility and disappointment. The last World Series win for the Giants was in 1954 against the Cleveland Indians. Since the move, The Giants made it to the World Series three times since the 1958 relocation, but lost each time. The Giants played and lost to the Florida Marlins in their last NLDS appearance in 2003, and the Marlins were the eventual World Series champs.

In this year’s Division Series, the Giants played the Atlanta Braves. and won the series three games to one. Playing the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS, they were heavy underdogs as the Phillies were the two-time defending National League champions. Their win over the Phillies was the first time that the NL West champion made it to the World Series since 2001.

The Texas Rangers

The Rangers franchise and their fans also were long suffering for success. This team started out in 1961 as the Washington Senators, and had ten out of eleven losing seasons while there. In 1972, the team moved to Arlington, Texas, and did not participate in post season play for over 20 years.

In the 2010 ALDS, The Rangers squared off against the top-seeded Tampa Bay Rays. They split the first four games before the Rangers won decisively in game five. This was the first divisional series win in franchise history. Additionally, the Rangers were the last team that had never won a post season series.

Up against the New York Yankees in the ALCS, the Rangers faced a team that they had never beaten in three post season appearances. By closing out the Yankees in six games, Rangers reached their first World Series in team history. It also marks the first time since 1991 that the AL West champion has won the pennant.

The 2010 World Series

This year was the 106th Major League Baseball World Series. The playoff between the American League champion Texas Rangers and the National League champion San Francisco Giants for baseball’s Commissioner’s Trophy was a best of seven game series. The Giants won the series and this coveted trophy 4-1 on November 1. This was their first World Series championship since 1954, and their first since relocating to San Francisco from New York City in 1958.

The Champion’s Commissioner’s Trophy

Unlike hockey’s Stanley Cup that is passed yearly from champion to champion, a newly created Commissioner’s Trophy is presented each year. This baseball champion’s trophy was first awarded in 1967 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Since 1967, the Commissioner’s Trophy has been awarded every year except 1994 when a season ending players’ strike forced cancellation of the entire post season. The New York Yankees, with their seven World Series wins, have won the most Commissioner’s Trophies. In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds are tied for the most trophies won with three wins apiece.

Trophy Design

The current Commissioner’s Baseball Trophy is made by Tiffany & Co., and is worth approximately $15,000. Excluding the base, the trophy is 24 inches tall, and is 11 inches in diameter. Being made of sterling silver, it weighs approximately 30 pounds. The highlight of this striking trophy is 30 gold-plated flags, one for each of the Major League teams. These flags rise above a silver baseball covered with latitude and longitude lines that symbolize the world. The stitching on the baseball is pure Tiffany, being done in 24-karat vermeil. The signature of the commissioner is inscribed on the base, along with “Presented by the Commissioner of Baseball”. This is a new design, and was presented for the first time to the winning New York Yankees at the conclusion of the 2000 World Series.

This baseball trophy is truly one of a kind, and emblematic of the skills necessary to make it through a long season, playoffs and the winning of the World Series.

I was going to write something yesterday, after Madison Bumgarner’s pitching gem put the Giants one game away from their first San Francisco championship. I was going to say that, looking back on it, October 31st of my 21st year wasn’t entirely unlike his, except I spent it stuffing my face with miniature Milky Ways while he dominated the fourth game of the World Series. But I held off – we were still one game away and this thing was far from over.

Notice that I say “we” were still one game away. I’m not one of those delusional sports fans who imagines himself somehow connected to elite athletes because he has season tickets and played a few innings of baseball as a kid. My tie to the Giants has been an ongoing rite of passage and something as elemental as a son’s connection to his father. It isn’t about the joy of the game or the shared, treasured moments of a lifetime. I’ve known baseball fans like that and am enviously aware of their existence, enthusiasm, and sustained ebullience. Their appreciation is just as significant as my own, but their approach and interpretation much different. That bullshit never flew with my dad. We talked baseball plenty, but it was almost always about what was wrong with the Giants. It was oddly better when they tanked and didn’t come close to winning their division – less expectation, less to worry about. He said it as recently as October 10th, in an email: “Posey is slow but he is a hell of a player other than that … I am not too optimistic about the rest of the playoffs.” Only in knowing my father could you understand the strange comfort in such sentiment. Had he expressed hope, I’d have known that senility had taken hold.

Pessimism should never be confused with the absence of caring, or for that matter with the inability to enjoy life. When my brother was born, my dad brought a small baseball glove with him to the hospital – much to the chagrin of his own, more intellectually-minded father. I’ve heard the story many times about a distracted, first date with my mother in July of 1960, when my dad couldn’t pull himself away from the radio. Juan Marichal, in his rookie debut, took a no-hitter into the eighth and finished with a one-hit shutout. I wasn’t there in ‘51 when Bobby Thomson hit his Shot Heard ‘Round The World, and yet I have a distinct image etched in my mind of Dad swinging from the light fixture in my uncle’s house. There were many seasonal peaks in my lifetime, too – league championships in ‘89 and ‘02, Mike Ivie’s grand slam against the Dodgers, Will Clark vs Mitch Williams .. too many to list, really. But win it all? That, like the Yankees, wasn’t what life was all about.

I’d said it long before Ken Burns did in his eloquent soliloquy set to a dramatic backdrop just prior to Game One of this World Series – baseball is about coming home. The quote is neither Burns’ nor my own, but is idiosyncratically relevant to anyone who’s ever followed and understood the game. I was watching Burns’ pregame monologue on a small screen attached to the seat in front me on a much-delayed JetBlue flight from San Francisco to New York just one week ago; an ironically appropriate circumstance on several levels. The Giants were opening the World Series back home, my brother and his son were at the park a few rows behind the first base dugout, and I was traveling in the opposite direction of the team’s 1958 move from the east to west coast. I’ve made the trip countless times over the last seven years, but this time was different. Sitting in the seat to my left was Dad.

We’d headed back to Brooklyn together to look at an apartment I was considering buying. It wasn’t an easy trip out; the old man isn’t exactly a care-free traveler and upon learning of a two-hour delay at SFO he let out an expletive so jarring that it elevated the airport threat-level from orange to red. His stay was brief but enjoyable, and though the Giants lost the third game while he was flying back Saturday night, by late Sunday they held a three games to one advantage over the Texas Rangers. At one point Dad had even made an uncharacteristically hopeful prediction: “if they take one of the games in Texas, I think they’ll do it.”

Neither I nor my father has ever met Tim Lincecum, the Giants’ 26 year-old, two-time Cy Young winning, right handed pitcher. He renewed my consistent interest in the team three seasons ago and I started paying attention to daily box scores again in Brooklyn. There was something invigorating about this goofy-looking kid who led the league in strikeouts but was often mistaken for a bat boy. But to imagine that he’d do what he did last night wasn’t within the realm of realistic imagination. I called my father after the last out and said “they did it .. the Giants won the World Series.” What had just happened defied clever phrasing. “They did?” he said – my dad, the biggest baseball fan I’ve ever known. “Oh shit, that’s great. I was recording it .. I was too nervous .. I’ve got to go watch.”

Oh yeah – I passed on the apartment.

Discipline, hard work and intense focus are needed to be a great hitter. That and the easy steps I’m going to share with you in this article. Good hitting doesn’t happen overnight. It is a process that must be taken seriously.

Follow these five tips sincerely and you are guaranteed to be a better hitter:

I. Live batting practice is necessary. Each time you should get at least 20 hits, to each part of the field. Be sure to bunt the ball a few times too.

II. Find a few hitting drills you enjoy and practice them frequently. You will probably need help from a parent, teammate or coach.

III. Condition your body throughout the year with cardio and weights.

IV. Eat food that is good for you and avoid junk food or fattening foods.

V. Watch how the professionals do it either by attending games or watching videos.

These steps will help prepare you for any hitting situation. Every time you step up to the plate there’s a different circumstance and you have to be ready for whatever comes your way. These baseball tips will be sure to help you hit the ball better, no matter who the pitcher is.

Those who work hard and take the right steps are more likely to succeed. In high school I played against Todd Helton, who now plays for the Colorado Rockies. We could all tell there was something different about him. He worked hard and we knew it. He stood out from the rest and now you can see how his hard work paid off. In his professional career he has a .324 hitting average.

You too can live out your dream as a great baseball hitter if you’re willing to put forth the effort. Follow these steps, don’t give up and don’t be afraid to ask for help along the way. Even Helton didn’t do it all by himself. Most of all, believe in yourself and in your capabilities.
