Bude as a seaside resort dates from Victorian times and caters for the most discerning of modern day tourists. Between 1824 and 1874 Bude became notorious for its wreckers plundering the ships that came to grief off the coast. The Bude Canal was dug in 1823 primarily used to carry beach sand 20 miles inland to Launceston, also exporting local product, thus the waterway brought development to the town.
