The Hero Syndrome Among Doctors

Liam has always shown remarkable leadership abilities and reliability as a colleague. For this reason, everyone already seems to run to him when it comes to matters inside and outside of work. As a doctor, he also seems to have the innate need to help and simply fix things for his patients.

With the several tasks he is faced every day, things also get overwhelming for Liam. However, he finds it hard to say “no” to the requests for help of his colleagues. He also feels guilt-ridden and blames himself when he is not able to help and is not able to do something to make things go the way he want to.

Several others may also have the same traits as Liam’s. Some people are simply more responsible and passionate about their jobs and the tasks they do than others are. On the other hand, some people having the same traits can also mean them having the so-called Hero Syndrome.

The Hero Syndrome is defined as the unconscious need to be recognized, needed and appreciated. It is normal for a person to feel the need to be valued; nonetheless, having this need to the point that one does not anymore feel satisfaction from completing tasks but instead feel resentment, is apparently not any longer typical.

One’s own duties will be neglected in order to just do other people’s tasks. This may then be one of the primary causes of the resentment that is felt. A person suffering from the Hero Syndrome may also go as far as resorting to drastic measures in order to gain attention or recognition. Once, a policeman reportedly planted a bomb to have himself a moment of bravery.

Of the many kinds of professions, doctors are said to be some of those who most likely can develop this syndrome. One cannot deny the mere fact that doctors are seen in the light of a “hero”. In their minds, they have pre-set the responsibility to help save the lives of others. However, doctors only have their medical instruments along with their knowledge, and they do not have extraordinary powers for them to be able to succeed in being able to do the said task all the time.

It is all right to feel the need to be needed, just as it is all right to help the people extending their need for help. However, one can only do so much and when resentment already grows, perhaps it is finally time to say “no”. Sometimes, it is also wise to think about one’s own welfare.
