Better Basketball Shooting

Better basketball shooting requires dedication and commitment. But you also need to know exactly what to do, otherwise you could end up dedicating yourself to bad basketball technique. In this article, I’ll share with you 3 great tips to improve basketball shooting, no matter what your current ability.

Tip 1 – Choose Your Arc

Not ever good shooter has the same arc in their shot. Some look more flat and some more curved. So long as you are within the “sweet” range then it does not matter.

Just don’t make your shot too flat or else many of your shots will fly off the rim. Don’t make them too curved either because this can introduce inconsistency that is difficult to get rid of.

Tip 2 – Keep Your Free Throws Simple

In the sport of rugby, kicking the ball was revolutionized a few years ago by one guy who decided to use the same routine for every single kick. Basketball is a totally different sport, of course, but there is a lot to be said for sticking to exactly the same routine when you are given a free throw.

Develop your routine, make sure you have good form and then stick to it, each and every time. This gives you the most control every time you take a shot.

Tip 3 – Hang Like “Air” Jordan

Michael Jordan was clearly one of the greatest basketball players of all time. During his career, very few other individuals came close to beating him. Little wonder then that he won so many accolades.

One this that Jordan did well (among others) was to hang in the air for as long as possible. Some even claim that his jump and measured hang time defied the laws of gravity.

Whether you believe this or not, check out some videos of Jordan and check out his jump technique. Jordan usually shot at the peak of his jump but he often shot while he was on the way down too.

What you can learn from Jordan is the way that he was able to almost keep his leg motion independent from his shooting motion. Too many players try to shoot from their entire body, starting with the legs. If you shoot this way then you will only introduce more inconsistency into your game.

Try practising shooting while on the way down from a jump, just like Jordan. Keep doing this and you will develop a better natural shooting ability for it.
