The history of Mercedes Benz started from a man, named Emil Jellinek. He was a businessman that was born in Leipzig (Germany). Then, he settled in Nice (France) and became a car distributor of DMG products. DMG was an abbreviation of the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, an automotive company that was founded by Gottlieb Daimler.

At one time, Emil Jellinek begged to Wilhelm Maybach begged, the chief of Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) designer, in order to make the car that was faster, lighter, and safer. Wilhelm Maybach was the person who designed the first truck in the world, and it was directly produced in early 1896.

On October 1, 1896, his car was exported for the first time into London. His name then was immortalized in the form of a sophisticated car “Luxury Mercedes Benz”.

On April 2, 1900, 26 days after the death of Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach kept his promise and began making cars based on the request of Emil Jellinek. This time could be said the milestone of “Mercedes Benz”. The name of “Mercedes” itself was taken from the name of Emil Jellinek’s daughter, who was 10 years old. The use of the name “Mercedes” by Emil Jellinek was the personification of parents’ affection to their daughter. It also showed the business instinct of Emil Jellinek that was very high.

He valued the importance of building a commercial image by choosing a trademark name. “Mercedes” in Spanish or “Merci” in French has a positive meaning, which was “gratitude”. In Latin, it meant “great gift”.

DMG’s first car with the name Mercedes was launched on December 22, 1900. It was patented as directly as a trademark in 1902. Like the world-class corporations, merger is something that is difficult to avoid for DMG if he wants to develop the company.

In 1926, Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie (founded by Karl Benz) did mergers. As the result, the name of “Mercedes” changed to be “Mercedes Benz”. Karl Benz was the maker of passenger car which was patented under the name of “Benz Patent Motorwagen Omnibus.” On March 18, 1895, this car regularly took passengers to the route Siegen – Deuz – Netphen as far as 15 kilometers.

From the merger agreement, Daimler Benz Aktiengesellschaft (Daimler-Benz AG) stood. His first product was a six-cylinder diesel truck that was the first finding in the world. It was called as Mercedes-Benz L-5.

In 1998, Mercedes-Benz merged anymore with Chrysler Corporation, the giant automotive industry in the United States. This merger formed a new company that was registered in Germany under the name of DaimlerChrysler. It was based in Stuttgart and Auburn Hills – Michigan (near Detroit, United States). The name of Chrysler also took the name of the inventor from the United States, Walter P Chrysler.

In Asia, DaimlerChrysler did merger with Mitsubishi Motors (Japan) and Hyundai Motor (South Korea). In Africa, DaimlerChrysler will concentrate from South Africa.

Until now, Mercedes Benz has been a century old. This company is one of the five leading car manufacturers in the world. Two major wars-World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945), which devastated Germany even did not affect in this company.
