79 Million Americans Have Prediabetes, and Most Do Not Know It!

Prediabetes is a condition in which the blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to meet the criteria for Diabetes Type II. Which third of American adults are most likely to have Prediabetes? Risk factors for this condition include excessive weight-especially excessive abdominal fat-lack of exercise; being over 45 years old; having a family history of diabetes; having had diabetes when pregnant (gestational diabetes) or giving birth to a large baby; having Polycystic Ovary Syndrome; sleeping less than five and a half hours per night; having high blood pressure; and having an abnormal cholesterol panel. The American Diabetes Association recommends testing for all people with these risk factors. The recommended tests include a fasting sugar level, a glucose tolerance test, or a hemoglobin A1C.
