StarCraft 2 Race Comparison

When choosing a StarCraft 2 race it helps to really know the details of each race. On one hand you want to choose the race that you are the most interested in, and on the other hand you want to choose the race that you find easiest to play. You choose which race interests you, but I can help you choose which race will be easiest for you to play. This is why I’ve written this StarCraft 2 race comparison guide.

  • Lets Start With Terran
  • Terran is the race that many players gravitate towards initially. Terran buildings and units sound natural, they sound understandable to new players. Whereas the other races, which I discuss later in the StarCraft 2 comparison guide, are a little more unnatural sounding.

Another Terran advantage new players like is how easily they can defend themselves. The Terran wall-off is a Terran specific defense that is strong and intimidating. Terran have a wide variety of abilities and powerful units to boot. They achieve great results with small effort. Their wide variety of powerful units gives them the element of surprise in many matchups.

Lastly I should mention the Mule and Scanner sweep. Two awesome Terran abilities, and Planetary Fortresses are great defense for your expansions!

  • Lets Talk About Protoss
  • When comparing Protoss to the other races, the most obvious statement is they are the most technologically advanced. For instance Protoss units warp, literally teleport, into the map. The Protoss Zealot can easily take on a group of Zerglings single handedly. Protoss units have shields which absorb a certain amount of damage for them, these shields replenish themselves over time. StarCraft 2 race comparison is as easy as listing out the unique attributes of each race.

One awesome Protoss advantage is Warp technology, which lets you warp units into any power field available. You can put units directly into a battle, or directly into the opponents base. This only works for units which you can build from a Gateway.

One last advantage I have to mention is warping in buildings. Probes (Protoss’ worker unit) can choose a location for a building to warp in, and then walk away as the building warps in. This gives Protoss the amazing ability to literally drop a bunch of buildings anywhere they want and then walk away as an entire base could warp in, incredibly powerful.

  • Zerg
  • Lastly I want to talk about my favorite race Zerg. Zerg win through sheer numbers, we are meant to swarm the opponents more powerful units.

Being a Zerg player myself, I can tell you this isn’t the easiest race to learn. Just keeping up with the other races is a taxing process, every building you create costs you a Drone. What is the benefit to playing Zerg if they are more complex then the other races? I believe it is the potential Zerg players feel, like if we could master every nuance of the Zerg race we would be unstoppable. Zerg can expand cheaply, spread creep and vision, and practically dominate an entire map regardless of the opponents intervention, if Zerg are played perfectly.

As far as Zerg advantages go, we have more dynamic power then any other race. We can have literally 12 Mutalisks being produced at the same time. This ability to mass produce units is mostly unique to Zerg, and if used correctly can easily topple any opponent.
