A Guarantee of Harmlessness

Only in the memory, and in the fertile brains of the uninformed, are reptiles really common. Many specialized techniques have been developed to make their discovery more certain and their capture less time consuming. Weather, geography and vegetation play their part in selecting the time and place for trips, and, even so, the experts all too often draw complete blanks. One of the most popular routes of exploration passes through mile -on mile of citrus groves, vineyards, walnut and peach orchards, past a giant cement works and a steel foundry. The route passes the country of Ramona, reaches the pine forests, then on toward the desert goal, through valleys lying in the shadows of mighty San Jacinto peak. On such a trip we passed from forest to chaparral, and then to miles of rock-studded slopes. There the chemise, with russet trunks and dense tufts of vivid green, needle-like foliage, gave way to the vanguards of the desert, dagger-clothed yucca, spire-stemmed agaves and discouraged looking Nolina.

Russian culture may be hard to understand because it often contradicts itself. Russian ladies wouldn’t disclose personal details to strangers, but at the same time they wouldn’t have a problem entering each others rooms without knocking or opening their spouses mail. Do People See Colors Exactly the Same?

The answer is maybe yes and maybe no. It is an inconclusive answer but it does allow for the differences and the power of how our senses perceive and absorb our world and how that shapes our perceptions. What one senses and perceives will then shape one’s perceived reality. The sense of the exact hue of a color – as in incorporating tones of black and white and the inclusions of shades of other colors – does not always match the perceptions of the person next to you. A good part of this has to do with individualistic neural processing, or just how our senses get connected to the brain, and the rest has to do with which senses are dominant in our world “intake”.

What Does the Bible Say About Astronomy?

The word in the Greek is Aster or Astro. This is where we get the word Astronomy. Astronomy is a study of the stars with all their astrophysical systems. This would include our solar system. The solar system is an example of a star system. The sun is one of several kinds of stars. Some stars pair up with others. Some are grouped as global star systems. Some are grouped as open clusters. Some are very big while others are very small. All are in systems called galaxies. The whole system is called the universe. Even though there have been studies from the beginning of time, we know very little about them.

Life in Our Solar System

Man has often wondered if life exists on other planets in our solar system, and if so what kind of life? Up until the 20th century it was thought every planet could harbour life, even more advanced than ourselves. You just have to point to the Orson Wells radio broadcast in the 1930’s where widespread panic was caused by a theatre production of “War of the Worlds”, which listeners mistakenly thought was real. This was an indication of how much this belief was held in the common psyche.

When it Comes to Stars, Size Matters!

One of the really awesome and mind-blowing aspects of astronomy is the sheer immense scale of the distances between planets, stars, galaxies and galaxy clusters. Our everyday terrestrial notions of scale, size, and distance must be discarded, even if we just consider a transit between the Earth and Mars. Kilometres first fall as units of measurement, then astronomical units (AU)(one AU is the distance between the Earth and Sun) — when we start to consider interstellar distances we have to look at light years as units of measurement (the distance that light travels in one year).

A Walk Through Time

Everything in our life is time based. Have you ever wondered how man learnt to keep time and we learnt to make the time piece that we see today.

* Thousands of years ago (3500 BC) before Christ was born man used the sun to keep time. The first proof in history of this is got from the Egyptian civilization who built obelisks a tall four sided tapered pillars placed in strategic locations to study the casting of shadows from the sun. The movement of shadows helped to partition the day into two and gradually over the next centuries a more precise model the sundial was created which was divided into 10 parts.
* The wise Egyptians kept working on the concept to make it as accurate as possible and the sundial was improved by the introduction of a merkhet, perhaps the oldest known astronomical tool. This was developed in 600 BC where a pair of merkhets was lined with the Pole Star to get the North-South line.
* By the year 30 BC there were almost 13 different sundials in use in Greece, Asia Minor and Italy.
* There is also proof of water being used to tell time.
* The introduction of mechanical clocks was perhaps in Europe; complex designs of wheels and gears were used that moved with weights attached to them. As the gravity pulled the weights the wheels slowly turned in a slow systematic manner. A pointer used to be attached to the wheel to mark the hours. These devices became very popular in churches and monasteries to toll the bell on the hour.
* In 1582 the famous scientist Galileo’s discovery of the oscillatory movement of the pendulum led to markings of small intervals of time.
* In 1656 the Dutch astronomer devised a pendulum clock
* Shortly in 1670 William Cement an English clockmaker devised a clock that took the pendulum a full second to move back and forth – the invention of the “Grandfather’s Clock.” The accuracy of the clock kept increasing over the years.
* Then the quartz clock of modern times came into being in 1577.
* The atomic clock is by far the most precise in the history of mankind.
