Work, Hard-Working, and Growth

Work is an activity that utilizes energy, both physical as well as mental; to realize something. Human Work has multiple dimensions/features. Broadly speaking, work has four dimensions – natural, personal, social, & economical. First, natural work is based on natural demands of life. A few work habits are required to satisfy basic natural needs such as hunger, thrust, and nakedness. We may call these basic work habits – eating, drinking, and dressing – a natural work. Generally, parents/teachers educate on natural works during early phase of life. The aim of natural work is to make our life compatible with nature or to accommodate natural demands. Second, personal work is outcome of personal needs and desires, every individual has some unique needs and desires, whenever a person satisfies his/her exclusive needs or desires such as specific dressing, definite food items, and distinct hobbies we may call it personal work.

Developed Leaders: A Salute to Veterans

Standing on the aircraft flightline in the Middle East in August was a humbling experience. First of all, it was hot. I don’t mean a warm sunny day: I mean hot! With the heat radiating off the sea of asphalt, the temperature easily reached into the 130 degree range every day. There was a nice breeze blowing though — sort of like the breeze coming from a blast furnace. This breeze was a steady 40 to 50 miles an hour and carried with it the sand of the desert. The running joke was that part of our stay there included a free exfoliation. As I looked out at the cargo aircraft on the flightline, I saw the scurry of activity that was my maintenance crews working very long days to make those old, worn-out aircraft fly. They were cheerful and took the weather conditions in stride. The only time they seemed to be upset was when they could not get a part they needed to fix a plane. I say “my” maintenance crews because it was my responsibility to lead them. And that’s why standing there was such a humbling experience. They didn’t need much leadership.

Executives – Get Unstuck From Low Resilience

Are you resilient? Are the people who work for you resilient? Chances are that your answer is that both you and the people who work for you could be more resilient. Resilience is the ability to bounce back after change or a set back. It also is a measure of flexibility and even hardiness. We see lack of resiliency when we see resistance after a change has taken place. We see it when people cannot seem to forge ahead in spite of difficulties. People who are not resilient tend to push back and even give up and give in to what they cannot seem to change.

Re-Imagining Leadership for the 21st Century

Today’s complex, dynamic, and global world presents both challenges and opportunities. We are required to understand and practice leadership in new ways. We are called to expand the paradigm of leadership to encompass and integrate knowledge and experience from many fields and traditions. If leadership can be viewed as our individual and collective response to change the world for the better, then leadership for the 21st century must be re-imagined if it is to be of service to this world. More than the behaviors, traits and styles of individuals, leadership can also be seen as an intrinsic property of all social enterprises, arising through and among relationships, toward fulfilling a group’s, or organization’s, or community’s “reason to be.” Educating people in this expanded paradigm of leadership has been our passion at Saint Mary’s College since 2001. To date we have graduated over 300 people from public, private, and not for profit sectors committed to be of service of their particular team, organization, or community.

Learning to Be a Leader

Leadership is learned by experiences of success, failure and course correcting.

When I was in high school, I was in the band front, the part called show flags or silks. We twirled, turned and twisted big flags on 7 foot poles while marching in intricate, choreographed moves. We marched with the band at football game half-times, in parades and in marching band competitions. We even had the privilege of traveling twice from our home state of Pennsylvania to Orlando, Florida and to Niagara Falls, Canada.

Everyday Leadership

I used to think that being a leader meant being the head of an organization or a group. The experience of working as a Girl Scout leader for 10 years changed that thinking. I learned that leadership for me was more about finding ways of empowering others and creating an environment for them to be more of who they are.

Best Ways to Develop Leadership Skills

Leaders are not born, they are made. At least that was the philosophy of no less a leader of men than former Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi. While many think that leadership skills are inherent and an individual either has them or he/she does not, Lombardi thought that observation, trial-and-error, and practice could turn run-of-the-mill people into great leaders. Who am I to argue with the man who won the first two Super Bowls in NFL history? As such, let us take an examination of some of the best ways to develop and hone one’s leadership abilities.
