Brown Bag It – Save Calories & Cash

Why does health food cost so much!? I don’t really know the answer to that, but I have my suspicions. In today’s economy we need to save money, but the high calorie foods are cheaper than the food that’s are good for you. It’s no secret that organic vegetables are healthier for you, but they are also more expensive than regular vegetables. I think it’s mainly because of the old “supply and demand” rule we all learned back in high school, but I’m no expert. All I know is that we can still eat healthy and not empty our wallets at the same time.

Let’s take breakfast for example. The average cost of a drive through breakfast is now between $7.00 to $9.00. Add another $1.50 to $3.00 in gas money depending on where you go and how long you sit in the drive through line waiting for your order. You open the bag and what do you get? Some processed eggs, meat and some sort of carbohydrate with a few packs of condiments to make it all taste good. Oh and lets not forget the coffee or juice. What you don’t see in the bag are all of the calories and preservatives that come with your tasty breakfast. Yuck!

Now let’s take a look at that same breakfast if you were to brown bag it. Two eggs, about .30c, two strips of turkey bacon .50c, two slices of whole wheat toast around .24c and one slice of cheese .18c. You just spent $1.22 on a breakfast sandwich that will run you around 310 calories! That’s a savings of $5.78 and I didn’t even add the fuel cost! Now just think, if you ate breakfast at home for a month you could save $115.60. I bet that could go a long way towards paying off that department store credit card bill right?

Now the average drive through breakfast sandwich is around 480 calories. By preparing your own healthy breakfast sandwich of 310 calories you just saved 170 calories. That gives you a few more calories to play with at lunch time. After we do the math, brown bagging it is really a win, win situation for losing weight and saving money.
